Successful Convening of the "Academic Activity Month" Commemorating the 105th Anniversary of Nanchang University and the Elite Forum 2026 (Fifth and Sixth Session)

On April 17, 2026, at 14:30, the School of Life Sciences at Nanchang University convened the "Academic Activity Month," commemorating the institution's 105th anniversary, alongside Sessions V and VI of the Elite Forum. Held in Conference Room B102 of the Science and Life Building on the Qianhu Campus, the event was moderated by Dr. Yadong Zhou, Director of the Department of Biological Sciences. The keynote speakers were Dr. Qiang Wang and Dr. Limin Lu from the Institute of Botany, Chinese Academy of Sciences.

Dr. Wang, an expert in the taxonomy of Lamiaceae and Campanulaceae and alpine plant diversity, integrates morphological, molecular, and biogeographical data to elucidate evolutionary patterns of alpine plants. In his presentation, "Progress in Plant Diversity Surveys and Flora Compilation in the Pan-Himalayan Region", he detailed large-scale botanical expeditions and systematic survey results of his team. Drawing on recent fieldwork, he highlighted the rich plant resources and unique ecological value of the Pan-Himalayan region through comprehensive data and vivid case studies.

Dr. Lu specializes in the reconstruction and application of the Tree of Life. By synthesizing evidence from genomics, morphology, geography, and paleontology in phylogenetic and biogeographical studies within important plant taxa, she investigates the evolutionary mechanisms driving floristic evolution and diversity to inform biodiversity conservation. Her report, "Plant Diversity Research Based on the Tree of Life," addressed the phylogenetic underpinnings of plant diversity distribution patterns. Combining theoretical frameworks with empirical case studies, she demonstrated the utility of phylogenetic approaches in conservation biology, offering faculty and students renewed insights into plant diversity research.

During the discussion session, both researchers engaged in robust exchanges with the audience. Dr. Wang addressed inquiries regarding Pan-Himalayan surveys and flora compilation, sharing practical insights from his field expeditions. Dr. Lu provided meticulous responses to questions concerning Tree of Life construction, specific taxonomic phylogenies, biogeographical evolution, and conservation practices. The vibrant atmosphere and rigorous dialogue significantly broadened the research horizons of the participating faculty and students.
